The article is a kind of a hero's hero. The fact that it was written by Bartolomé de las Casas is important for this regard, as he is one of the most important figures in the history of mankind. In many respects, this text rebuts claims about indigenous American Indians made by Lope de Aguirre and also offers an alternative interpretation from someone who had been living amongst them for so long. It refers to indigenous Americans primarily as "Indians", but pays extra attention to those who have been reduced to slaves or captives and calls them "infantes". Although very bigoted towards Amerindians in his time, the author still managed to oppose slavery and advocate for their rights through his arguments. The author's position as a special person who was celebrated by many people of the era is shown through his use of words such as "bien" and "muy" (very). He died at the age of 85 years, on November 23, 1566 in Puerto de Caballos (Caballos Islands), which is currently known as Puerto Plata.
